According to a UN statement issued this week, the battle for Mosul has made 148,000 people homeless, with 12,500 people forced to flee their homes in the past week alone. The statement also says that the fighting continues to inflict high civilian casualties, with more than 1,500 wounded taken to hospitals in Erbil. While the fighting intensifies, we continue to work alongside the UN providing emergency food relief to thousands of people in dire need.

An IDP camp in Iraqi Kurdistan where night-time temperatures drop to below freezing

Speaking about the worsening situation in Northern Iraq, last Sunday Dr Sarah Ahmed, FRRME’s Director of Operations in the Middle East, and Alex Wentworth, Communications Officer, gave a talk at St Peter’s Brockley in South London.

They spoke about the people of Northern Iraq, Christian and Muslim, and the terrible suffering they have endured at the hands of ISIS. The people we are helping there have lost everything, in some cases even the shoes on their feet. Dr Sarah spoke of children she has met in the camps who are so traumatized by what they have seen that they have tried to kill themselves. One story she told was of a Christian woman who, fleeing from ISIS, was forced to leave her baby behind. To this day she does not know where her baby is.
