“I would like to thank you for the excellent work that
the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation is doing to engage with and support minority communities within Iraq.”

How you can help save Christianity in Iraq

Since ISIS was defeated on the battlefield last year, something very alarming has happened. Many who supported the plight of Iraq’s dwindling Christian community have stopped supporting them. The assumption may be that support is no longer needed, but this is far from the truth.

Across the Nineveh Plain (the heartland of Christianity in Iraq), towns and villages lie in ruins. While the reconstruction effort is under way, there are no jobs and the security situation remains precarious at best. To make matters worse, properties belonging to Christians have fallen into the hands of Iran-backed militias who helped liberate the area.

Practical help for the Christians of Iraq

We want to preserve Christianity in Iraq. With your support, we can. We are launching a unique initiative which will help the Christians get back on their feet. We have called this initiative: Nineveh SEED. This stands for ‘Sustainable Enterprise Economic Development’. It will include small business loans and specific programmes to revitalise the local economy and create jobs.

We are approaching governments and other major funders to finance this initiative. We must develop detailed plans for specific projects.

We visited the Nineveh Plain in April this year and began the detailed research for this programme. Some of the projects which we have so far discussed with local church and community leaders in the Nineveh Plain include:

  • Deep water wells and linked irrigation systems for villages
  • Greenhouses for market gardening businesses
  • A fertiliser manufacturing business
  • Business loans to re-establish enterprises destroyed by ISIS
  • Construction materials / manufacturing including cement and tarmac
  • Solar power
  • Tourism initiatives (initially for the ‘alternative’ traveller)
Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Nineveh Plain

Nineveh SEED Fund

The immediate need is to raise £12,000 to fund the development of these project plans. A highly experienced business consultant will visit Iraq with our team and will produce a detailed report which will enable us to apply for major grant funding. We are also establishing a designated fund for the projects which will follow. This is the Nineveh SEED Fund and already one legacy has been committed to this fund. If you would like to make a donation or leave a legacy to this fund you will be making a lasting difference to the lives of Christians in Iraq. In fact, you will be helping to save Christianity in Iraq.

Our work is already supported by British government ministers as shown by the quote from UK Government Minister Alistair Burt above. We are working with highly respected partners in the region, including the Syrian Orthodox, Chaldean Catholic and Armenian churches. However, funding is urgently needed to fully develop Nineveh SEED as a programme, able to attract major government funding. If you would like to support this initiative or any of our other projects, please see the giving options below or call Mike Simpson, our Chief Executive on 01730 267 673. Thank you!

Galatians chapter 6 says – ‘A man reaps what he sows… whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life’. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
