Financial Trustee / Honorary Treasurer

The Board of Trustees at FRRME is seeking to recruit a Trustee who would serve as Treasurer for the charity. The following is the agreed role description.

Overall:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice
  • Oversee the strategic financial management of the charity to ensure that the Foundation achieves a financially sustainable position and builds appropriate reserves
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place
  • Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
  • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits
  • Ensures that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation/regulations
  • Ensures that the charity applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects
  • Contributes actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in setting strategic direction, defining goals and setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • Work at all times in close co-operation with the Chief Executive, Finance Manager and Chair of Trustees and Finance Sub-Committee

Specifically:

  • In cooperation with the Chief Executive, liaise with relevant staff, committee members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organisation
  • Make fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them
  • Working closely with the Chief Executive, oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year and oversee and present budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to trustees
  • Regularly report the financial position at committee meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc)
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, and oversee the implementation of and monitoring of specific financial controls and adherence to systems e.g.
    • Cheque signatories
    • Purchasing limits
    • Purchasing systems
    • Petty cash/ float
    • Salary payments
    • Pensions
    • PAYE and NI payments
    • Others as appropriate
  • Leading in the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost-management and investment policies
  • Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity
  • Overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process
  • Appraising the financial viability of strategic plans, proposals and feasibility studies
  • Ensuring that due diligence has been undertaken for all partners and that contracts/MOUs are in place
  • The Treasurer is responsible for conducting internal audits, developing best practice and leading on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner, including Board‐level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations

Qualities:

  • Qualifications: should be a Chartered or Certified Accountant with a minimum of 5 years’ experience at board level within the third sector
  • Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations;
  • Knowledge of financial management and control systems (as necessary)
  • Good financial analysis skills
  • Knowledge of charity SORP
  • Competent use of IT skills
  • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders
  • Financial analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship

We are looking to recruit someone who shares the vision and values of of the Foundation.

Commitment up to one day per month, term 2 years, renewable. Trustee meetings are held four times a year, normally in Petersfield but sometimes in London. The Hon Treasurer is also a key member of the Finance Sub-Committee which meets monthly.
